A search engine works by using programs called 'spiders' they go out and explore the internet for documents and their addresses. Once the document and address is found they are then sent back to the search engine's indexing software which then either stores the eniter document or just the documents title in a database. When a search is performed using key words the database is searched for matching documents, the search engine then lists the documents found as hyperlinks on a web page.
