Sexual Harrassment....

• What is Sexual Harassment?
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that can occur at work, school, tafe, uni or in social settings. Sexual harassment in the workplace is any form of unwelcome sexual attention that is, or that you find, offensive, humiliating or intimidating that occurs anywhere you carry out any task for your employment.

• What are typical things that a person would do to Sexually Harass someone?
Unwelcome touching, grabbing or other physical contact
     Comments that have sexual meanings
Asking for sex or sexual favours
     Leering and staring
Displaying rude and offensive material, e.g. calendars, cartoons
     Sexual gestures and body movement
     Sexual jokes and comments
     Questions about your sex life
     Sex based insults
Criminal offences such as obscene phone calls, indecent exposure and sexual assault.
• What sort of person Sexually Harasses others?
Like bullies, people who sexually harass others at work often have low self-esteem or have been a victim of violence themselves. They sexually harass others as a way of making themselves feel more powerful.

• What should you do if you are the victim of Sexual Harassment?

Tell someone. Human Resource Manager, your employer, a supervisor/manager or health and safety representative

If the situation continues or is serious, you might need to make a formal (written) complaint that follows company policy. This could lead to couselling, mediation or eventually termination of employment of the bully.

If the person doing the bullying is your employer or they do not do anything to stop it, it's important you get outside support and advice.

• How can Sexual Harassment affect you?

    Feel stressed, anxious or depressed
Want to stay away from work (more than usual)
Feel unable to trust your employer or the people you work with
Lack confidence and self-esteem in yourself and your work
Have physical symptoms of stress such as headaches, backaches, sleep problems
Have your life outside of work affected, e.g. study, relationships
Be less productive and unable to concentrate
• What are your rights?

No one deserves or asks to be sexually harassed. Everyone has the right to work in an environment free from harassment, bullying discrimination and violence.

Sexual harassment is illegal (under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984). All employers are obliged to provide a harassment-free workplace where every one is free to get on with their job. If they don't, they can be held legally responsible for acts of sexual harassment committed by their employees.

Bullying....

• What is Bullying?

Workplace bullying is when you are verbally, physically, socially or psychologically hurt by your employer (or manager), another person or group of people at work.

• What is the difference between having fun and Bullying?

Even if you think you are only having a laugh the person you are joking around with may not see it as that and feel as though they are being bullied.

• What are typical things that a person would do to bully someone?

Verbally abuse them about sexuality, gender, race, religion.

• What sort of person bullies?

Like bullying at school or other places, people who bully others at work often have low self-esteem or have been a victim of violence themselves. They use bullying as a way of making themselves feel more powerful.

• What should you do if you are the victim of Bullying?

Make sure you're informed - find out what the organisation's policies and procedures are for preventing and handling bullying.

Keep a diary documenting everything that happens, including what you've done to try stopping it. This can help if you make a complaint.

• How can Bullying affect you?

    be less productive
be less confident in your work
feel scared, stressed, anxious or depressed
have your life outside of work affected, e.g. study, relationships
want to stay away from work (more than usual)
feel unable to trust your employer or the people you work with
lack confidence and self-esteem in yourself and your work
have physical symptoms of stress such as headaches, backaches, sleep problems

• What are your rights?

Everyone has the right to work in an environment free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence.

Employers and employees have duties by law (eg Occupational Health and Safety Acts) to promote health and safety within the workplace and not to put themselves or their colleagues at risk.

It's also worth keeping in mind that bullying is not the same as conflict. Disagreement and conflict happens at most workplaces, however it should never turn into bullying or harassment.

Cyber bullying....

• What is Cyber Bullying?
Cyber bullying is a form of bullying, which is carried out through an internet service such as email, chat room, discussion group, online social networking, instant messaging or web pages. It can also include bullying through mobile phone technologies such as SMS.
• What is the difference between having fun and Cyber Bullying?

Having fun is when no one feels threatened or hurt, when friends might bully friends out of fun and laughs.

Cyber bullying is when an individual feels threatened, and has been hurt.
• What are typical things that a person would do to Cyber Bully someone?

Teasing and being made fun of
     Spreading of rumours online
     Sending unwanted messages
     Defamation.

• What sort of person Cyber Bullies?

Cyber bullies are just like bullies; the bullies often have low self-esteem or have been a victim of violence themselves. They bully others as a way of making themselves feel more powerful.
• What should you do if you are the victim of Cyber Bullying?

Tell someone. Human Resource Manager, your employer, a supervisor/manager or health and safety representative

If the situation continues or is serious, you might need to make a formal (written) complaint that follows company policy. This could lead to couselling, mediation or eventually termination of employment of the bully.

If the person doing the bullying is your employer or they do not do anything to stop it, it's important you get outside support and advice.

• How can Cyber Bullying affect you?

Just like bullying in real life, there can be terrible effects on those who experience cyber bullying.

Being bullied can lower your self-esteem and you may feel alone, sad, angry and scared. If you are being bullied it is not your fault and there is nothing wrong with you. Don't be afraid to let someone know that you are being bullied as they may be able to help you.

• How big of an issue is Cyber Bullying?
The number of reports of cyber bullying to the NetAlert Helpline has been increasing, particularly since 2006.

An online safety survey conducted by NetAlert and ninemsn in February 2007 found that:

16% of young people said they had been bullied online, while 14% were bullied through their mobile, with boys and girls experiencing similar levels.

56% thought it was easy to get bullied online
• What are your rights?

Under certain circumstances (such as harassment and making threats) cyber bullying is a criminal activity and is illegal. If you feel your safety is at risk, contact '000' or your local police. Police around Australia work together to reduce this type of crime and there are serious consequences if people participate in such activities

• Any other information you think will be helpful…

If you are being bullied you shouldn’t feel threatened by the person, you need to seek advice as soon as possible if things become serious and threats to your life has been made.

Passwords and zip files....

It is important to maintain case in passwords and URL's file names aren't as important.

Zip files are a popular data compression format. Files that have been compressed with the ZIP format are called ZIP files and usually end with a.ZIP extension. They are used to store/send large files that would normally not send via email etc.

Security and privacy..

Depending on what website I am on will determine what information i supply, is it is a secure website and they ask for information such as address, phone number etc then i provide it.

A cookie is a message given to a Web browser by a Web server. The browser stores the message in a text file. The message is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server.

You should never leave your computer unattended because you don't know who will be walking by and have access to information such as bank details, address etc.

Viruses..

Which type of files carry viruses?

Exacutable files

Share Alike (sa) :
You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.

Non-Commercial (nc) :
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for non-commercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works (nd) :

You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it

Creative Commons

The purpose of a creative common is so one is able to retain copyright while allowing certain other uses.

After answering a few questions the person gets a license, these can be expressed in several ways,
eg: 1) Commons Deed
     2) Legal Code
     3) Digital Code

The digital code can be added to a website where it'll be displayed as 'some rights reserved' with a link to the licence. in the future search engines and other applications will one day identify the licensee's work and recoginse how it's licensed all because of the digital code being embedded on a website.
Others can then search for 'non-commercial music' and a list of these songs will appear, once viewed this person then clicks on the digital code to obtain a copy of the common deed (human expression, plain language) and the legal code (nitty gritty).  Once this person has finished using the music eg for a movie they must give credit to the creator of the song.

My workstation....

My workstation isn't the greatest, it's my kitchen table, and I sit on a standard kitchen chair. I prefer sitting at the table because it is big and spacious, not ideal but it gets the job done.
Lighting consists of two fluorescent lights above where i work and there is a power point directly behind where I sit.
The only hazards that i believe there are is the power cord frommy laptop, it sits on the floor, un tapped and people walking past can quite easily trip over it.
Like I mentioned earlier, my work station isn't great so I would give it a rating of 3 out of 5.

Forums/newsgroups....

The purpose of a forum/newsgroup is so users can ask the 'community' questions or find out information about certain topics from other people interested in the same thing.

To participate in a forum you first need to sign up the the specific newsgroup (usually only ones that you are intersted in), once you have signed up you are then able to post questions to other users or comment/answer on a question that has already been posted.

Forums I think that are worth subscribing to are:

http://www.artology.net/main/

Search engines....

A search engine works by using programs called 'spiders' they go out and explore the internet for documents and their addresses. Once the document and address is found they are then sent back to the search engine's indexing software which then either stores the eniter document or just the documents title in a database. When a search is performed using key words the database is searched for matching documents, the search engine then lists the documents found as hyperlinks on a web page.

Here are a few search engines that i have used:
http://www.google.com/
http://www.yahoo.com/
http://www.bing.com/
Google being my favourite.

Here are a few new search engines:
http://www.dogpile.com/
http://www.ask.com/
http://www.altavista.com.au/

Damain names....

A domain name is made up of two parts an organisation's name and a suffix.

.gov means Reserved for United States government agencies
.net means For networks; usually reserved for organisations such as Internet service providers
.org means For non-commercial organisations
.com means For businesses and commercial enterprises; most companies use this extension

Here are a few country codes that caught my eye:

.cc Cocos (Keeling) Islands
.mt Malta
.pl Poland
.to Tonga

Web adresses....

The internet is made up of billions of 'electronic' files which are stored on millions of computers. A URL is the address used to access a specific file.

A URL is made up of three parts, the first part is http which is the method for retrieving a page. The second part is www which is the type of page, and finally the third part is the name of the page known as the internet domain.

Browsers....

A web browser is a porgram you use to access the internet.

I have used a number of web browsers including:

Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox
Netscape
Safari

My personal favourite would have to be Mozilla Firefox. Its simple design allows me to access websites easily, open up new tabs via keyboard shortcuts and save favourite websites.

How the internet works....

Basically the internet works by 'ringing' your internet service provider from dialer software on your computer, this software calls an access number and connects you to the internet.
Once connected to the net you then use a web browser like Mozilla FireFox to search for websites, you can either type in the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in the web browsers address box usually located at the top of the page or you can go to a search engine like Google and type in key words that the search engine will then use to find you pages realted to the key words entered.

How I use the internet....

The internet is an amazing thing that I use all the time, as I'm sure most people in the world do.
Most of the time I am using the internet for entertainment purposes, whether it be social networking sites like the ever popular Facebook to communicate with friends and family world wide any time of the day or night. Other sites I use frequently are Tumblr a 'blog/social networking' site that allows you to post your thoughts, links to videos, music anything you really feel like posting. You are also able to reblog other peoples posts or Like them. Twitter is yet another site I use to communicate with friends from around the globe without the cost of having to ring international numbers.
I  also use YouTube and Limewire to watch and listen to music. I obviously use the internet to view emails, running a business is made easier by the internet, I'm able to communicate with suppliers from across Australia with the click of a finger really.
Without the internet my life would be noticeably harder and expensive!!
